Welcome to Fill In The Blank Theatre!

A Note from Our Director…

From the very beginning of the devising process, I wanted our work to be highly visual and physical. For me, this is the most effective way to tell a story. When we have a dream, when we think of a memory, we visualise it through colours, objects and pictures.

I think it is important for audiences to go on a journey with our characters; to doubt themselves, to feel the same emotions, to make discoveries simultaneously. Although the work is not directly verbatim which in one sense gives us creative freedom, we still tackle stories and issues which affect people everyday; with that comes a great sense of responsibility to be sensitive to the subject and to allow audiences to make up their own minds about our characters.

Rehearsals for our first production have consisted of sharing our own stories and memories, looking at specific individuals suffering from amnesia, creating interesting shapes and relationships with our bodies and mixing projection, lighting, props, movement and music to connect science with emotion.

The Man Whose Memories Fell Out explores the effect that memory loss can have on a relationship. We present facts, we visualise emotions and thoughts and we explore the science behind the connections within the brain. My aim is to be poetic and beautiful even when what we are seeing or hearing doesn’t always match up.

Michael Woodhall.
